University Students Made Ashura for 1,500 People in Burhaniye
In Burhaniye, students of the Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Department, which was established this year at Balıkesir University Burhaniye School of Applied Sciences, said “We are also part of Balıkesir Gastronomy” with the activities of the Gastronomy Club due to the start of the new academic year. The students prepared ashura for 1,500 people.

A practical ashura preparation event was organized by the students in the multi-purpose kitchen located on the campus of Balıkesir University Burhaniye School of Applied Sciences. Speaking at the Ashura Event organized by the BUBYO Gastronomy Club, the Director of Burhaniye School of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Oğuzhan İlban, said, “The Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Department was opened for education for the first time this year. Our students chose us with a 100 percent occupancy rate. The students who registered and chose us will have a say in the gastronomy of our region and city in the coming periods and will carry out studies that will make a very important contribution to the need for qualified kitchen personnel in the region and create added value. As BUBYO, I once again say welcome to your new home. Today, together with our expert instructors and masters, we taught our students how to prepare ashura practically within the Gastronomy Club of our school. Such events will continue even faster in the coming period. We will experience the happiness of being together with our students with events related to many world cuisines, especially examples from all distinctive foods of Turkish cuisine. In addition, on the occasion of Ashura Day, we came together with our non-governmental organizations and civil administrators. As a state university, we want to fulfill our responsibilities to the public. We want to increase our cooperation with the relevant non-governmental organizations and present to the public the opportunities provided to our university by our state. Our work related to disadvantaged groups and citizens in need will continue from now on as it has in the past.”
District Governor İlyas Memiş, who attended the ashura event at BUBYO, said in his speech, “Dear protocol members and dear students, first of all, I greet you with affection on the occasion of the ashura event organized by our school. I congratulate our valuable instructors and students who contributed and who presented the ashura event, which our school has made traditional, in a more beautiful and meaningful way with the newly opened Gastronomy Department. The event was attended by Burhaniye District Governor İlyas Memiş, Burhaniye Vocational School Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muammer Bezirgan, Ayvalık Vocational School Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yakup Dinç, District Gendarmerie Commander Captain Alim Burak Çelik, Prison Company Commander Captain Ahmet Çağdaş Ak, Burhaniye Deputy Mayor Tamer Midilli, Treasury Director Mustafa Ak, Halkbank Branch Manager İlhan Karaca, and NGO representatives.
On the other hand, the ashura prepared for 1,500 people by the students of the Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Department was also delivered to the homes of families in need.
