University Students in Balıkesir Prepared a Project on Edible Wild Herbs
In the Burhaniye district of Balıkesir, a project was created by university students for those interested in local culinary culture.
The project titled “Flavor Trail – Edible Herbs”, carried out by students of the Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Department at Balıkesir University Burhaniye Faculty of Applied Sciences (BUBFA), was implemented with the motto “A Taste in Every Step, A Story in Every Leaf.”
The project aims to introduce edible wild herbs growing in the Aegean Region from gastronomic, cultural and ecological perspectives, record local knowledge, and contribute to a sustainable culinary culture.
In the first phase of the project, markets around Edremit and Burhaniye were visited and interviews were conducted with knowledgeable individuals on the subject.
Based on the information obtained and detailed research, a booklet was prepared that includes the benefits of edible herbs, routes where they can be found, and various recipes.
Speaking at the launch day of the booklet prepared within the scope of the project, Burhaniye Faculty of Applied Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Oğuzhan İlban drew attention to the students’ ability to protect the local gastronomic heritage and combine academic knowledge with field studies.
Thanking those who contributed, İlban said:
“With this project, an important resource has been created for the correct, conscious and sustainable use of edible wild herbs. The responsibility, team spirit and dedication shown by our students during the research process have made us extremely pleased. Our faculty will continue to support such studies that protect local values and contribute to society.”
