Medicinal Herbs Introduced at the Gastrobaçem Event in Burhaniye
Under the coordination of the BUBFA Alumni Employment Office, a talk titled “Medicinal Herbs: From Garden to Table” was held at Balıkesir University Faculty of Applied Sciences (BUBFA), moderated by BAÇEM Director Nazım Tanrıkulu and Lecturer Kaya Nihat Pekbay.
The event, which focused on “Healing Herbs and Medicinal–Aromatic Plants Used in Gastronomy”, attracted great interest from BUBFA students. Through this session, students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the use of medicinal herbs in gastronomy.
During the talk, BAÇEM Director Nazım Tanrıkulu provided valuable insights on topics such as the history of BAÇEM, the definition of medicinal and aromatic plants, their uses in gastronomy, the stages they go through from field to table, important considerations during production, key factors to be aware of during purchase, and appropriate storage methods.
Prof. Dr. M. Oğuzhan İlban, Acting Dean of BUBFA, emphasized the significance of the event, stating:
“Our country possesses an extraordinary richness in medicinal herbs and valuable plants. Therefore, it is crucial for us to highlight their role and importance in gastronomy. Within the framework of our cooperation protocol with the Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality’s BAÇEM, we continue our work on aromatic plants through our project, Gastrobaçem. With this event, we aimed to raise awareness among our students about the value of medicinal and aromatic herbs in gastronomy. I sincerely thank our distinguished instructors who contributed to this event, the Mayor of Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality, Mr. Yücel Yılmaz, BAÇEM Director Mr. Nazım Tanrıkulu, and all our students for their great interest and participation.”
The event concluded with a Q&A session, where students’ questions about medicinal and aromatic plants were addressed, followed by the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation to Nazım Tanrıkulu.
