From Nature to Children Project by BUBFA
Students from Burhaniye Faruk Kızıklı Primary School visited the Balıkesir Farmers Training Center (BAÇEM) and explored medicinal and aromatic plants as part of a project conducted by the Balıkesir University Burhaniye Faculty of Applied Sciences (BUBFA).
Within the scope of the “From Nature to Children with BUBFA” project, carried out under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Mehmet Oğuzhan İlban, Dean of BUBFA, and prepared by third-year students of the Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, BAÇEM hosted 4th-grade students from Faruk Kızıklı Primary School. During the visit, the students learned about the uses of medicinal and aromatic plants, which are also widely utilized in the field of gastronomy. The project allowed children to closely observe various plant species and gain hands-on learning experience in nature.
At BAÇEM — operating under the Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Department of Rural Services — students discovered that medicinal and aromatic plants are used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, perfumes, and essential oil production. They also learned that these plants serve as healing herbal teas and culinary spices.
BAÇEM technical staff member Elif Budak informed the students about the growing conditions and uses of the plants. After observing and examining the plants on site, the students concluded the technical trip by planting rosemary seedlings into the soil.
